For downtown Columbus families who want their child's education to start early and stay consistent. Your child doesn't need to bounce between daycare, preschool, and Kindergarten at three different locations. One building. One community. From toddler through 2nd grade. Franklin Learning Academy is a tuition-free public charter school in downtown Columbus. The school combines an early learning program with a K-2 charter school in the same building. Your child starts as a toddler, builds foundational skills through hands-on, age-appropriate learning, and transitions into the charter school for Kindergarten through 2nd grade without disruption.

It takes about 60 seconds. You've been through the cycle. Daycare ends, and you scramble for a preschool. Preschool ends, and you scramble for a Kindergarten. Each transition means new faces, new routines, and a child who spends the first two months of every new school adjusting instead of learning. Franklin Learning Academy breaks that cycle. Your child walks in as a toddler and walks out as a 2nd grader, and every year in between is part of the same intentional trajectory.

What the school day looks like

Your child starts the day with a free breakfast. The curriculum is hands-on and developmentally sequenced. Toddlers learn through movement, play, and sensory exploration. As children grow into the charter school grades, the instruction becomes more structured, building reading, math, and writing skills on the foundation the early years created. The school uses a points-based behavior system that rewards positive choices and consistent attendance.

A building built for young children

The campus has a gym, a library, an outdoor play area, and a cafeteria with a stage. Walking field trips take students to places like the local fire department, connecting classroom learning to the neighborhood. Downtown Columbus is right outside the door.

Support for the whole family

NYAP provides counseling and behavioral health support. The school donates leftover food to families after dismissal. Breakfast and lunch are free for every enrolled student. Dionna Burton's team understands that serving young children means serving their families, too.

What it costs: nothing.

  • No tuition for the charter school program.
  • Free breakfast and lunch every school day.
  • Counseling through NYAP.
  • Walking trips and age-appropriate outings included.
Franklin Learning Academy is publicly funded. Your tax dollars already cover it. Your child is 2, 3, 4, or 5 right now. The school he or she attends during these years isn't daycare. It's the foundation of every academic year that follows. If that foundation is fragmented across multiple buildings, multiple philosophies, and multiple transitions, the cost shows up in Kindergarten readiness, in confidence, and in the habits your child carries forward. This school offers one continuous path from toddler through 2nd grade.
